So, What Happens Next?
A wedding ceremony involves a few important steps behind the scenes. Here's a simple look at what the journey with me looks like.
-
We'll have a relaxed 20-minute phone or Zoom call to talk about your plans, what you're looking for and whether we're the right fit.
You don't need to have everything figured out yet.
-
Once you're happy to move forward, we'll lock in your date and I'll take you through everything that needs to happen from here.
This is also when we'll talk through your ceremony, what you would like included and what I'll need from you.
You don't need to arrive knowing what paperwork you need or how a ceremony is supposed to work — I'll guide you through it. -
At least 1 month before your wedding
We'll complete your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) and make sure the required documentation is in place.
I can lodge the NOIM up to 18 months before your ceremony, but it must be lodged at least one month before you marry.I'll let you know exactly what I need from you.
-
Before your wedding.
There are a few documents I need to sight and confirm before I can legally marry you. This will include evidence of your identity, date and place of birth, and evidence that a previous marriage has ended if applicable.
I will also meet with each of you separately and in person before your marriage is solemnised on your wedding day to sign the Declaration of No Legal Impediment to Marriage (DONLIM).
I’ll explain everything you need to know and make sure you’re comfortable with the process.
-
This is where we move beyond the paperwork.
We’ll talk about your relationship, the people who matter to you, what you’d like included and how you’d like your ceremony to unfold.
I’ll work with you to create your ceremony and, if you’d like to write your own vows, I’ll be there to help you find the words.
You don’t have to have it all figured out, that’s what the planning is for.
-
If you choose to have one.
A rehearsal isn't compulsory, but it can be a great way to walk through the ceremony, understand where everyone needs to be and settle any last-minute nerves.
We'll discuss whether one makes sense for your ceremony and what you'd like to run through.
-
Finally!
By this point, the planning, paperwork and preparation are done. Now it's time for you to enjoy the moment.
I'll arrive prepared and ready to conduct your ceremony, taking care of the legal requirements while you focus on each other and the people you've brought together to celebrate.
On the day, you, your partner, your two witnesses and I will sign the marriage documents. I'll then submit the required paperwork to Births, Deaths and Marriages within 14 days.
And then? It's time to celebrate. ❤️
Frequently Asked Questions
-
As soon as you have a date and venue in mind, it's worth getting in touch. You don't need to have everything figured out before contacting a celebrant, that's what the first call is for.
-
Your Notice of Intended Marriage can be lodged up to 18 months before your wedding, and it must be lodged at least one month before your ceremony.
If you're inside that one-month window, speak with the celebrant as soon as possible. In limited circumstances, the notice period can be shortened through an approved process.
-
That's completely okay.
If you've been divorced, you'll need to provide evidence that your previous marriage has legally ended.
If you're currently going through a divorce, let the celebrant know early so they can talk you through what's required for your circumstances. -
Not at all.
If you'd like to write your own vows, your celebrant can help you find the words. And if traditional vows aren't your thing, they will explain your options and help you understand what's legally required.
-
Yes. You'll need two witnesses who are 18 or older to be present and sign your marriage documents.
They can be family, friends or anyone you'd like to have witness your marriage.
Planning an elopement and don't have two witnesses? No problem. Let your celebrant know and they can help arrange them for you.
-
There’s no set number — every couple is different. Typically, we’ll have 1–3 meetings, but some couples may need more, while others may feel comfortable doing everything online and meeting in person on the day.
Our time together may include:
An initial chat — a relaxed, obligation-free conversation to get to know each other and make sure we’re the right fit.
Your NOIM — completing and signing your Notice of Intended Marriage.
Planning your ceremony — talking through your ceremony, vows, readings and any personal touches you'd like to include.
A rehearsal — optional, and arranged if you'd like to walk through everything before the big day.
Meetings can be held via video call, making it easy to fit everything around your schedule.
There’s no one-size-fits-all process — we’ll keep it simple and tailor it to you.
Got a Date In Mind?
Or maybe just a lot of questions?
Either way, I'd love to hear from you. Let's have a chat about what you're planning and see where it takes us.
